The European egg shortage caused by the bird flu epidemic has caused a significant price increase on the Hungarian market – according to recent data from RTL Híradó and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. Although eggs have been part of the margin-stopped product range for eight months, the average price of one piece is already 89 forints, which represents a 20% increase in price in one year.

The narrowing of European supply is pulling down prices

The egg population has declined in several countries on the continent, which has narrowed supply and driven up prices. Hungarian consumption habits are stable – households buy an average of 4–7 eggs per week – but the rate of price increase is remarkable: the Hungarian price increase is almost twice the EU average.

Market reactions and outlook

A trader in Győr is currently selling at a price of 80 forints per piece and does not plan to immediately increase the price. According to the expert interviewed, if the market supply were to expand by 10–20%, it would be absorbed without any problems – the current prices therefore primarily result from a shortage of quantity.

Holiday season: further increases possible

Experts expect further price increases until Christmas, as the holiday season traditionally increases demand for eggs in Hungarian households.
