A record amount of support for children in need to catch up
More than 50 million forints were collected from donation coupons sold in Tesco stores to support the Ecumenical Aid organization’s year-round Kapaszkodó program. The customers of the supermarket chain thus surpassed last year’s results by more than 30 percent, and the amount raised covers the weekly meals of 10,000 children or provides 5,000 children with a social experience. Children living in such difficult circumstances can receive help in this way, who otherwise would not be able to start life with the same opportunities as their peers.
Between May 13 and June 16, 2024, Tesco employees sold a total of more than 200,000 donation coupons to support the beneficiaries of the Ecumenical Aid Organization’s Handrail program. As the largest fundraising team in the country, the customers of Tesco stores support the organization’s work throughout the year with a total of more than HUF 50 million, in the framework of which it helps more than 3,000 children in difficult situations catch up.
The largest number of donation coupons, a total of 11,000, were sold in the Tesco hypermarket in Mátészalka, and almost the same number (5,149 and 5,148 respectively) were bought in the Megapark store in Budapest, as well as Szent István király u. in Mosonmagyaróvár. Those who enter Tesco Express at number 44, who are thus the second and third most generous donors in the Tesco network.
“For 15 years, we have been participating in the fund-raising campaigns of our strategic partner, the Ecumenical Aid Organization, in order to support the equalization of opportunities for disadvantaged children together with our colleagues and customers. We are extremely pleased that, significantly exceeding last year’s HUF 38 million subsidy, this year we can contribute more than HUF 50 million to overcoming the disadvantages caused by poverty. I thank our customers and my colleagues for the enormous selfless support that enables the organization to provide support to children in various forms throughout the year. How much help this means is clearly shown by the fact that the amount provides 3,333 children with a one-month development session or up to 10,000 children with meals for a week”
– said Nóra Hevesi, head of communications at Tesco Hungary.
Kristóf Gáncs, the executive director of the Ecumenical Aid Organization, said:
“During the decade and a half spent in cooperation with Tesco, a whole generation of children grew up, who have now even finished primary school. Thanks to the outstanding support of the supermarket chain, we were able to help many thousands of needy children catch up. We believe that the handholds we provide are a decisive support for overcoming the disadvantages caused by poverty. Our first word is to thank you that Tesco has been committed to us for so long and is supporting our goals in an exemplary way! We would like to thank all the employees of the department store chain who participated in the current campaign and we are grateful to the customers who joined the effort by purchasing the donation coupons!”
