The Consumer Protection Authority monitors compliance with advertising bans
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH), together with the government agencies under its professional supervision, will monitor compliance with the general advertising rules and the regulations protecting the Hungarian language this year, as in previous years, thus contributing to the protection of Hungarian families and consumers.
The NKFH told MTI on Saturday that the widespread spread of modern technical devices and the experiences of the consumer protection authority justify the continuous monitoring of individual advertising bans, since advertisements, as sales promotion tools, not only influence but also determine consumers’ transactional decisions.
Compliance with and monitoring of language protection rules were described as of paramount importance, adding that based on these, the text of commercial advertisements appearing in Hungarian-language press products, Hungarian-language radio and television programs, and outdoor advertising media must be in Hungarian – including the slogan.
The only exceptions to this are the name, designation and product label of the business – they wrote.
In addition, notices placed in shops and shop windows to inform consumers must also be displayed in Hungarian.
They indicated that, similarly to commercial advertisements, this requirement can be met by including the Hungarian equivalent of the foreign language text in the same legible manner and at least in the same size.
According to the announcement, government agencies acting within the scope of consumer protection authorities checked more than 300 advertisements and more than 100 consumer information and shop signs during the latest language protection inspection.
