The latest Privátbankár Price Basket survey, following the previous month’s small jump, once again measured a more serious monthly price decrease: grocery shopping became 3.9 percent cheaper compared to the previous month.

The newspaper’s staff – as they have done every month for over 18 years – visited one store each of three domestic hypermarket chains, Auchan, Interspar and Tesco, on Monday, November 3, to examine how the value of our sample grocery basket consisting of 30 products changed.

Well, the 3.9 percent monthly price decrease means that we could purchase the same 30 foods 1,504 forints cheaper in November than in October. There has been no example of such a monthly price decrease in more than half a year – the last time we saw something similar was in April, just in the weeks following the introduction of the margin stop.

With such a monthly price decrease, of course, the annual data also fell to a level not seen in a long time. Of course, we cannot talk about negative numbers, as large family purchases did not become cheaper than they were in November last year.

But we have not seen anything like the 3.3 percent annual price increase rate measured in November 2025 in the Privátbankár Árkosár survey this year – the last time the newspaper’s staff measured a slower rate was in September 2024, more than a year ago, in domestic hypermarkets.
