Anikó Raisz: the green transition must strengthen the competitiveness of European economies, including the Hungarian economy
Hungary would like to see a green transition that strengthens the competitiveness of European economies, including the Hungarian economy, rather than reducing or possibly destroying it, the State Secretary for the Environment of the Ministry of Energy stated in Brussels on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the meeting of ministers responsible for the environment, regarding the EU climate target set for 2040 – according to which the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 90 percent compared to 1990 levels – Anikó Raisz emphasized that Hungary considers this target to be too ambitious.
The emission reduction target must be adopted by the European Council, but in order to make a responsible decision, the member states need more time to discuss the set targets so that they are achievable, she emphasized.
“We know that we have to act, we know that we have to be ambitious, but it is worth considering what is reality”
– she said.
Hungary has reduced its emissions of harmful greenhouse gases by 48 percent since 1990, while the European Union average is 38 percent. Sixteen member states are performing below the EU average, eleven countries above the EU average.
“We are among those who have done what needs to be done”
– stressed Anikó Raisz.
