Tender supports long-term qualitative renewal of forests
The aim of the tender supporting the restructuring of forests is to increase the adaptability and biological value of forests and to ensure the diversity of tree species and forest structure – said András Mocz, Deputy State Secretary responsible for forests at the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) on the M1 current channel on Tuesday.
The support affects three target areas – he explained. During the restructuring of forests, after harvesting, a more biologically valuable species is replaced in the area, he brought up the native oak and acacia as examples. Support can be requested for improved renewal of forests, when the goal is to increase the mix, so that the area is rich in species and biodiversity prevails. For this purpose, support of nearly a thousand euros per hectare can be requested – he noted.
The third target area is forest renewal with climate-resistant species
András Mocz said in the Kossuth radio program Good morning, Hungary! that one of the biggest challenges is what tree species to recommend for certain areas. It must be taken into account that the soil has become drier, the water balance of the soil has changed, so more drought-tolerant species should be considered. He listed acacia or native poplars among these, and non-native but non-invasive tree species that do not take away the space from native species could be considered. He also spoke about the continuation of the Forest in Schools Program, and from October, 64 forest educators will hold 1,200 free forest education sessions for 6-14-year-olds in 400 schools. There is huge interest in the program that started last year, and the places were filled in three minutes. The focus of the autumn theme will be on the wildlife of the soil, he added.
