Aldi grows in Spain by 60 % over five years
Aldi is the fastest grower in the Spanish food market: the discounter opened 168 new stores in the past five years, resulting in a 60 % increase in store area since 2020.
Aldi Nord is the fastest-growing supermarket chain in Spain with more than 7.7 million customers. Just last year, the discounter welcomed over 500,000 new customers, an increase of 8 % compared to July 2024. This is thanks to significant expansion: the opening of 168 new stores since 2020 resulted in a 60 % growth in store area, reaching a total area of more than 530,000 sqm. The discounter now has 480 Spanish branches.
Aldi currently has more than 7,700 employees in Spain, an increase of 38 % compared to five years ago, Financial Food reports. The expansion is not over yet: at least twenty additional openings are planned for the second half of this year. New locations will open in September in the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands and the Madrid region. In recent years, the chain has also entered new regions, such as the Canary Islands, where it now has sixteen stores.
Moreover, the discounter has doubled its logistics capacity by opening three new distribution centres since 2020, in Agüimes (Gran Canaria), Sagunt (Valencia), and Miranda de Ebro (Burgos). At the same time, the capacity of three existing centres has been expanded.
