In order to comply with food hygiene and food safety regulations, ensure traceability and apply appropriate kitchen technology, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) has ordered a nationwide inspection of restaurants and buffets selling gyros.

Recently, several problems have arisen in connection with the preparation and sale of gyros, which is why gyros are now receiving increased official attention. Inspections by the NKFH and government agencies revealed that in several cases the cooling chain was broken, the origin of the meat could not be properly verified, or there were problems with the cleanliness of the kitchens. The inspectors found objectionable issues in nearly 70% of the official inspections conducted so far, and the operation of 4 buffets selling gyros was suspended.

The NKFH has therefore ordered a nationwide inspection to determine whether catering establishments selling gyros comply with food safety and hygiene regulations. The NKFH and the government agencies under its professional supervision pay special attention to the origin and traceability of raw materials, compliance with storage and heat treatment temperatures, and kitchen processes such as marinating and skewering meat.

The inspections also cover the personal hygiene of employees, the cleanliness of work areas, the information provided to consumers about allergens, and whether catering establishments have made all necessary official notifications.

The NKFH and government agencies will take decisive action in the event of any irregularities, as the health and rights of consumers are the most important and must not be violated.
