National Museum Pedagogy Conference started at the University of Sopron
The 17th National Museum Pedagogy Conference, entitled “Museum Catwalk – Trends in Museum Pedagogy”, has begun in Sopron, and this year it is being implemented by the Open-Air Museum of Ethnography – Museum Education and Methodology Center in cooperation with the University of Sopron. The two-day professional event, attended by almost a hundred museum professionals, looks back on the diverse museum pedagogy developments of recent years and also presents future museum trends. The closing program of the Autumn Festival of Museums, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, provides participants with an opportunity to discuss professional issues and provides space for joint thinking and mutual inspiration.
At the press conference leading up to the conference, Magdolna Závogyán, State Secretary for Culture at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, pointed out the most important contemporary museum pedagogical trends that clearly show that the museum profession is constantly renewing itself and courageously reacts to social changes, new demands and forms of learning. Magdolna Závogyán emphasized that “the cultural government supports and encourages all value-creating, innovative initiatives with the means at its disposal – because we believe and profess that only young generations with a strong identity, who know and respect their past, consciously shape their present and responsibly plan their future can be the guarantee of long-term survival”.
Dr. Zsolt Sári, Deputy General Director of the Open-Air Museum of Ethnography, joined the previous speakers and drew attention to the fact that the Skanzen has had and currently has a pioneering role in the domestic popularization of museum pedagogy. As a cultural strategy institution, they feel it is their special responsibility to introduce the museum pedagogy trends and innovations of the coming period to the domestic professional community, and to strive to shape the profession’s modern approach through their national events. Along these lines, the 17th National Museum Pedagogical Conference also deals with the professional evaluation of the past 20 years and examines the museums and museum pedagogical trends of the future. With the aim of strengthening the scientific foundations of museum pedagogy, it initiated strategic cooperation with higher education institutions, including the University of Sopron.
