The vast majority of Hungarians would modernize their homes in the near future, while satisfaction with the condition of residential properties shows a mixed picture, according to a recent national survey by Wienerberger. Despite the fact that almost half of the respondents are satisfied with the condition of their property, 72% of respondents plan to renovate in the next five years. Most are dissatisfied with the condition of the walls, bathroom and insulation, but one third of those surveyed would also be happy to finance the roof structure or outdoor works (fence, paving). The new rural home renovation subsidy is widely known, but only few are aware of the details of the application, even though the scope of its use is extremely diverse both inside and outside our homes.

The majority of the Hungarian population plans to renovate in the next five years, according to a recent national survey[1] conducted by the market-leading building materials manufacturer Wienerberger, which surveyed more than 1,100 respondents. The representative research of the company, known for its modern masonry and roofing solutions and outdoor coverings, examined satisfaction with the condition of domestic properties, the most important renovation areas and attitudes towards financing options. The survey is particularly relevant because from March 26, 2025, not only those raising at least one child can apply for the non-refundable state subsidy, but also pensioners, for example, will be added to the circle of beneficiaries.

According to the results of the survey, more than half of the Hungarian population lives in a family house they own (52%), a quarter also lives in a home they own (25%), while the remaining part of the respondents lives in a rented apartment (23%) or a rented family house (5%). Almost half of the respondents said they were mostly (29%) or completely satisfied (18%) with the condition of their property, while about a third of respondents were only moderately (32%), a fifth were not (13%) or not at all satisfied (9%) with the quality of their living space.

The coming period may even generate a growing wave of renovations, as according to the research, nearly three quarters (72%) of Hungarians are considering renovating their home or its surroundings to some extent in the next half decade. The most frequently mentioned renovation plans during the survey included painting or tidying up the walls (29%), modernizing the bathroom (24%), improving the insulation (24%), and replacing the heating system (23%) and windows and doors (23%). In addition, the need to renovate the electrical network (20%), the kitchen (18%), the roof structure (16%), and the fence (14%), the facade cladding (8%) and the paving (6%) outdoors also appeared in a significant proportion of the responses.
