National gyro inspection: 350 buffets and restaurants inspected, 85 procedures, 25 units closed, 1,300 kg of food withdrawn from circulation
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) conducted a nationwide raid on buffets and restaurants selling gyros. The inspection series, which lasted several weeks, affected 350 catering establishments, of which 85 were subject to official proceedings, and the amount of fines imposed already exceeds 17 million forints. Some of the inspections are still ongoing.
The operation of 25 stores was immediately suspended due to the most serious hygiene deficiencies. In several places, contaminated work surfaces, overcrowding, inadequate hand washing facilities and mixing of equipment were observed during the preparation of raw meat and ready meals.
The authority withdrew 1,300 kilograms of food from circulation due to lack of traceability, expired best-before dates and labeling errors. Nearly a quarter of the employees did not have a valid health book, and every sixth place lacked proper traceability of raw materials. Allergen labeling did not comply with the regulations in 17% of cases.
The authority warns: hygiene failures pose a serious food safety risk, therefore inspections will continue in the future to protect consumers.
