The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) has launched a nationwide thematic investigation to monitor consumer protection practices in traditional and e-commerce from a sustainability perspective: the primary objective of the investigation conducted by government agencies is to verify compliance with the rules on the redemption fee, and to determine whether the green claims made by businesses on certain products are true, accurate and verifiable.

The NKFH told MTI on Friday that the government agencies’ inspections cover, among other things, whether the amount of the redemption fee is properly and clearly displayed, whether the redemption option is available during all opening hours, whether manual collection is available in the event of a malfunction, whether consumers receive clear information about the operation of the redemption point, and whether the redemption fee is actually refunded in accordance with the consumer’s request.

Another focus of the investigation is the legal use of green claims, which are labels, phrases or logos that refer to the environmentally friendly nature of a product, service or business.

The consumer protection authority will examine general environmentally friendly labels (“Sustainable”, “Environmentally Friendly”, “Recyclable”) as well as trademarks and logos – such as the Environmentally Friendly Product Mark or the EU Margarita Ecolabel – but will also check the legality of their use. The investigation covers both traditional retail outlets and online shopping platforms.

The NKFH considers it particularly important that consumers receive accurate and truthful information about sustainability aspects and that systems are in place that truly contribute to environmental protection.
