Huge result: more Michelin recognition for Hungarian restaurants and hotels than ever before
Unprecedented success at the MICHELIN Guide awards in Hungary on October 9, 2025: the world’s leading restaurant guide presented a total of 84 distinctions. Inspectors confirmed every existing Hungarian Michelin-star rating, so Budapest’s Stand and Tata’s Platán Gourmet retained their two stars, and all one-star restaurants also kept their accolades. The number of Bib Gourmand distinctions and MICHELIN Recommendations increased, and there was a new entrant among the Green Star restaurants as well. The hotel industry also has reason to celebrate: as a result of this record-setting “rain of awards”, MICHELIN now highlights 42 Hungarian hotels that offer exceptional experiences. This regionally outstanding achievement is high-level recognition of the development of Hungary’s tourism sector.
The MICHELIN Guide awards gala has for years been a standout celebration of Hungarian gastronomy. At this prestigious event, Hungarian restaurants that deliver exceptional quality and taste day after day—according to the strictest international inspectors—receive their distinctions. This is why it is a huge achievement that all our previous two- and one-star restaurants have retained their ratings.
Dr. Túri Anikó, Administrative State Secretary of the Ministry for National Economy, said at the ceremony: “Hungarian tourism has reached a historic high: last year we welcomed more guests than ever before, and the growth of domestic guest traffic expanded at three times the EU average. This momentum remains unbroken this year as well: month by month, the number of guest nights and accommodation and hospitality revenues are increasing, proving that tourism is one of the most important engines of the economy. Today, our international and domestic guests are not only looking for sights but also for authentic experiences—be it a dinner to remember for a lifetime, or a flavorful bite that embodies the treasures of Hungarian soil, and the work and innovative spirit of Hungarian professionals. The MICHELIN Guide’s awards give these experiences international credibility. Michelin distinctions are not only triumphs of gastronomy, but international seals that strengthen the tourism of the entire country—the stars’ glow turns the world’s attention to Hungary today.”
In addition to the stars, the inspectors made decisions in several other categories. Once again, the national selection includes those outstanding restaurants that earned a MICHELIN Recommendation. The circle of venues with the Plate (Assiette) symbol expanded with eight new entries.
More restaurants than ever received the Bib Gourmand distinction for offering high-quality cuisine at moderate prices: four in the capital and nine in the countryside—mostly traditional eateries.
The Pajta in Őriszentpéter added a Green Star to its existing one Michelin star for its commitment to sustainability—making it one of six restaurants in Hungary to hold this inspector-awarded distinction.
Csendes Olivér, CEO of Visit Hungary, emphasized in his speech: “Gastronomy today is much more than a culinary experience—it is a shared international language that connects people and cultures. More and more travelers set out specifically to taste the true character of a country: nearly 20% of travelers journey expressly for gastronomic experiences, and over half of premium travelers now book their chosen restaurants in advance. Discovering local flavors and ingredients is one of the strongest motivations for travel—and in this, Hungary is particularly strong. Gastronomy is also a set of values: responsibility for guests, the community, and the environment. Sustainability is our common cause.”
Individual excellence was honored as well. The “Sommelier Award” went to Norbert Varga of the two-star Stand in Budapest for his stewardship of wine-and-food harmony, while the “Young Chef Award” was presented to Dávid Pallag of Rutin in Budaörs. The “Service Award” recognized Róbert Ráduly, restaurant manager of UMO in Budapest. The “Opening of the Year Award” went to PADI in Rátka, Tokaj-Hegyalja.
The MICHELIN Guide app and the MICHELIN Guide National Selection of Hungary, to be published in December, offer up-to-date information and act as a compass to help tourists find outstanding gastronomic experiences during their travels.
On October 8—one day before the grand restaurant awards gala in Budapest—MICHELIN’s inspectors also announced their hotel distinctions. The hotel “keys”, MICHELIN’s equivalent of stars, were awarded to 13 outstanding Hungarian hotels. Two of them earned two keys, while the other eleven received one-key recognition. A further 29 Hungarian hotels were added to MICHELIN’s list of recommended properties. Thus, the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection now highlights a total of 42 Hungarian hotels offering exceptional experiences.
MICHELIN restaurant award categories
In addition to the star distinctions defined in 1936, MICHELIN now evaluates several other categories as well. The well-known one * means excellent cooking—worth a stop if you are nearby. ** is awarded to restaurants that are worth a detour, while *** recognizes exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey in itself. Alongside these, Bib Gourmand goes to restaurants—typically excellent bistros or family-run spots—offering very good quality at moderate prices. The Plate (Assiette) distinction highlights carefully prepared, good cooking, while the Green Star recognizes efforts made in favor of sustainability. |
