Self-regulation?
New legislation (which is to become effective on 1. February), compelling bar and restaurant owners to prepare an inventory every night, has met intensive resistance from trade organisations. Unfair lobbying by the Hungarian Association of the Spirits Industry is suspected behind the regulations. Trade organisations have recommended that members should reduce their purchases of spirits by 50 percent in protest. According to Tamás Háber, chairman of the Guild of Caterers, it is not impossible to get the legislation withdrawn, but this will take months. He believes that ideas like this legislation conceived by outsiders can only cause damage to the trade.
