Gala apples are cheaper than a year ago
In Poland, this year’s Gala apple harvest is coming to an end, and purchase prices have already fallen below last year’s level, FruitVeB reported. While in the first weeks of the season prices were similar, and in some places even higher, than in 2024, a steady decline began towards the end of September.
Smaller-sized lots (65+ diameter) are currently being sold for PLN 1.60-2.00/kg (145-185 HUF/kg), while larger apples (70+) are priced at PLN 2.00-2.50/kg (185-230 HUF/kg). This represents a 29-33 percent drop compared to the beginning of September.
In the same period of 2024, the average purchase price of Gala was PLN 2.10/kg (HUF 190/kg) for the 65+ category and PLN 2.40/kg (HUF 220/kg) for the 70+ category. This year, on the other hand, prices are around PLN 1.80/kg (HUF 165/kg) and PLN 2.25/kg (HUF 205/kg), which corresponds to an annual decrease of 6–14 percent.
Last season, prices suddenly jumped on September 19th after the harvest was completed and storage began. This year, this turnaround is still pending, so the market is waiting to see how prices will develop during the autumn storage period.
