Christmas shopping in Croatia could be cheaper – the neighbor also has an advantage in fuel prices
For those living near the border, it may be especially worthwhile to do some of your Christmas shopping in Croatia this year: several basic foodstuffs and fuel are cheaper than in our southern neighbor – according to Sonline’s on-site report.
Fruits and basic foodstuffs: significant price differences
In the Virovitica store examined, most of the Christmas staple food was available at a lower price than in Hungary:
-
Oranges: 758 HUF/kg – at home 899 HUF/kg
-
Tangerines: approx. 300 HUF/kg – significantly cheaper than Hungarian prices
-
Eating oil: 497 HUF on sale, 532 HUF at full price – 739 HUF in Hungary
-
African cod: 1,145 HUF on sale, 1,514 HUF without sale – can reach up to 2,000 HUF in Hungary
According to the report, many Hungarians living along the border – including shoppers from Barcs – regularly cross to buy fruit and basic food, due to the more favorable prices.
Christmas decorations: no significant difference
The price of Christmas decorations and ornaments in Croatia is roughly the same as the domestic price level, and you can’t save on this product range.
It’s worth refueling, though
The fuel price is now on the Croatian side more favorable:
-
Croatia: €1.45/liter (approx. 555 HUF)
-
Hungary: 579 HUF/liter (average price, November 22nd)
Many cross-border buyers therefore connects big shopping with refueling.
