Coffee has become more expensive in Italy
The price of a cup of espresso, beloved by Italians, has risen by almost fifty percent, as the price of coffee, like butter and chocolate, has risen by almost fifty percent, the consumer protection organization Assoutenti reported.
In bars in Rome, the price of a cup of coffee has risen from one euro to at least one euro and ten cents. Similarly, cappuccinos and all other coffee-based drinks have increased by ten to twenty cents. In Bolzano in the north, the price of a cup of coffee has risen to over thirty cents per euro, and in Naples in the south, it has reached one euro.
In Italy, the average price of a cup of coffee has risen to 1.21 euros, an eighteen percent increase since 2021.
In Italy, coffee consumed standing at espresso counters is one of the most popular staples, the price of which does not tend to fluctuate. Italians drink six billion cups of coffee in bars every year. It is considered a social consensus that everyone should be able to afford a cup of coffee. That’s why it rarely goes up in price, and every price increase is met with great response.
One of the slogans during the coronavirus pandemic was that the prices of many products had gone up, but Italians could drink a cup of coffee for the same price before and after Covid.
With the current price increase, “Italians’ breakfast has become a luxury,” Assoutenti opined. The price of butter exceeded thirteen euros per kilo on average, which led to an increase in the price of pastries, which are also part of Italian breakfast.
