EPR fees will increase from October: the prices of several products may double
From October 1, the price of many products in Hungary may increase significantly following the decree of the Minister of Energy – writes Index.
According to the legislation published in the Hungarian Official Gazette on Monday evening, the EPR fees (extended producer responsibility fees) that manufacturers – and ultimately consumers – pay to Mohu Mol Hulladék Zrt. for the recycling of products and packaging will increase.
The increase affects most packaging, especially non-recycled metal, plastic and glass materials. The prices of screens and monitors, lamps, batteries and accumulators, as well as vehicles and tires will also increase.
The extent of the increase varies by product group: in some cases around 10 percent, in others it can even double. Free Europe highlighted as an example: the EPR fee for a computer monitor was already five times the Austrian level.
Mohu launched its new circular waste management system in 2023, operated by its subsidiary. EPR fees generated HUF 220 billion in revenue for the company in 2024, and this amount is expected to increase further following the October increase.
