October tea prices: why did Hungarians’ favorite hot drink become so expensive?
Inflation and the rise in the price of raw materials had a significant impact on tea consumption habits, as the rising prices of food products affected not only tea, but also added flavorings, such as lemon and honey. The price of acacia honey, which was HUF 3,490 in 2019, has now nearly doubled, and by the fall of 2024, the price of lemons has skyrocketed again: by September, it has risen to HUF 1,310 per kilo – Pénzcentrum writes.
Declining tea consumption
The amount of tea consumed has decreased dramatically in recent years. In 2019, Hungarians consumed an average of 19.5 dkg of tea per year, which corresponds to 98-195 filters. This number decreased to 12.9 dkg by 2021, and in 2022 it only rose back to 14 dkg. This amount has not been seen this low since 1993.
How much will a mug of tea cost in autumn 2024?
Drinking tea has become a burdensome expense for many. According to KSH data, in September 2024, a box of decaffeinated fruit tea cost HUF 725 on average, a box of Earl Gray 684 HUF, and a box of black tea fruit tea 674 HUF. All this means that making a simple pot of tea, which includes two filters, half a lemon and some honey, now costs HUF 227 on average – 29% more than in autumn 2021.
What can we do about high prices?
Although tea has become a luxury item in many households, there are tricks that can be used to reduce the cost of tea drinking:
Search for special offers: It is worth watching the promotions of supermarkets, and if you see boxed tea at a discounted price, it is worth buying a larger quantity. You can save up to HUF 2,000 annually.
Own-brand products: The own-brand teas of many supermarket chains are of the same quality as the products of more expensive brands, yet they belong to a lower price category.
Health fund purchase: In drugstores, some herbal teas can be purchased from health fund savings, which can be useful during the season of respiratory infections.
Use of lemon substitute: With the increase in the price of lemons, the use of lemon substitute can be an economical alternative. Although the vitamin C content of fresh lemons is higher, lemon substitutes can also contain useful nutrients. It is important not to add it to hot tea, as vitamin C breaks down at high temperatures.
Drinking tea can increase the feeling of comfort and support healing in the cold months, but due to the ever-higher prices, it is already considered a luxury for many. With the cost-effective shopping solutions, we can enjoy the pleasant moments of hot drinks this fall and winter.
