Economic researcher Oeconomus: Budapest is one of the world’s most prominent cities for sports tourism
Budapest has made great strides in becoming an important sports tourism destination, in 2022 – overtaking Doha, the host of the soccer world championship – it was already the 13th most prominent city for sports tourism in the world, and in 2023 it already became the tenth most popular destination for international sports tourism, he wrote the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation.
The actuality of the analysis sent to MTI on Friday is given by the World Athletics Championships in Budapest starting on Saturday, which is the biggest sports event in the history of Hungary.
It was announced: in recent years, numerous examples have shown the positive impact of sport on tourism. During this year’s Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, a record number of 150,000 guest nights were registered, the 2022 Water World Championship, which was held as a drop-in due to the withdrawal of the city of Fukuoka, increased the number of guest nights in Budapest by half a million, and a significant increase was also experienced at rural locations, while the coronavirus epidemic after the 2022 European Men’s Handball Championship lured foreign tourists back to Hungary – they ranked.
Sports tourism is a special form of travel that includes two main trends: partly those who participate in sports-related activities, partly those who visit major sporting events, they wrote.
