Greek Hellenic Dairies’ plans regarding Alföldi Tej Kft. have been made public
As we have also reported, the acquisition of Alföldi Tej Kft. by the Greek Hellenic Dairies failed due to the Hungarian government’s decision. However, in connection with the transaction, the prospective buyer Hellenic Dairies revealed its detailed development plans.
The company told Reuters that it not only intended to maintain, but also expand the Hungarian company’s domestic operations. The plans included broadening the product portfolio with new items, retaining and developing milk producers, and carrying out major building and equipment investments. The development plan also covered the modernization and expansion of facilities, Portfolio noted.
The shareholders of Alföldi Tej Kft. had already accepted the offer before the Hungarian government blocked the deal during the foreign investment screening process. The official explanation was that foreign ownership would lead to raw milk exports and more expensive imported dairy products.
In recent years, Hellenic Dairies has expanded through acquisitions in Romania, Bulgaria, and Cyprus. Alföldi Tej Kft., which employs more than 700 people, processes nearly 270 million liters of milk annually, but has been loss-making since 2021.
