Passenger traffic at Croatian airports increased, but cargo traffic decreased

Croatian airports handled more than 10 million passengers in the first eight months of the year, a 6.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year, the Croatian Statistical Office (DZS) announced on Tuesday. Passenger traffic continued to grow in August, while cargo traffic decreased significantly.

According to the statistical office, 103,300 take-offs and landings were registered at Croatian airports between January and August, which is 4.6 percent more than last year. In August alone, 21.4 thousand flight operations were carried out, 3.4 percent more than a year earlier.

Freight transport, on the other hand, fell by 10.7 percent: 6,400 tons of goods were handled in the first eight months of the year, and 732 tons in August, which is 21.5 percent less than in August last year.

The most passengers in August were received by Split Airport, 757.5 thousand people, which is 4.7 percent more than last year. In the first eight months of the year, Split was the second busiest airport in Croatia with 2.8 million passengers, an increase of 7.4 percent.

Dubrovnik Airport registered 541.5 thousand passengers in August, 2.4 percent more than in August last year, and between January and August it received 2.2 million passengers, 4.7 percent more than in the same period last year, which puts it in third place.

Zagreb Airport received 487.7 thousand passengers in August, an increase of 11.6 percent, and thus achieved the highest rate of expansion in Croatia. With 3.1 million passengers in the first eight months of the year, it became the country’s busiest airport, with a 9.4 percent increase.

Expansion was also experienced at the airports of Zadar, Pula and Rijeka, while passenger traffic decreased at Osijek Airport: 6,400 passengers were registered in August, 6.2 percent less than last year, and 31.3 thousand between January and August, which represents a 1.4 percent decline.

According to DZS data, in August, Croatian airports handled the largest international passenger traffic with Germany and the United Kingdom, where traffic growth was observed. France is in third place, where a slight decrease was recorded.
