Retail turnover increased in the euro area and the EU
Compared to the previous month, retail sales in the euro area and the European Union increased in January, but decreased year-on-year.
The statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, announced on Wednesday that in January the retail turnover in the euro area increased by 0.1 percent, as expected by analysts, compared to December, when a decrease of 0.6 percent was measured, while in the European Union there was an expansion of 0.3 percent. were recorded in January following the 0.7 percent fall in December.
On an annual basis, the retail turnover in the euro area changed from a 0.5 percent decrease in December to a 1 percent drop in January, a larger 1.3 percent drop than experts expected. The retail turnover of the EU accelerated from a 0.5 percent decrease in December to a 0.6 percent decrease in January.
In the European Union, in one month in January, the retail turnover of food, beverages and tobacco products increased by 0.8 percent, with the exception of fuel, that of non-food products rose by 0.1 percent, and that of fuel expanded by 1.7 percent.
