Domestic fish production in ponds increased in 2024
A total of 22,838 tons of fish were produced in Hungarian ponds in 2024, which is 16.1 percent more than the previous year. The vast majority of fish production, 81.5 percent, was concentrated in three regions in 2024: the Northern Great Plain, Southern Transdanubia and Southern Great Plain.
From an economic point of view, carp remains our most important fish species, accounting for 78.3 percent of fish production for food purposes in ponds in 2024. The decisive share of Hungarian fish production is still provided by ponds, whose operating area was 26,570 hectares in 2024. The amount of fish produced in intensive production systems increased by 2.1 percent compared to the previous year and reached 5,785 tons, of which 4,307 tons were produced for food purposes. The value of fish and fishery products exports in 2024 was HUF 13.3 billion, while imports amounted to HUF 56.7 billion. The foreign trade balance thus showed a deficit of HUF 43.4 billion, which exceeded the loss in 2023 by HUF 1.4 billion.
