Watermelon production area and production volume also increased
According to KSH data, 101.3 thousand tons of watermelons were harvested from 2.49 thousand hectares of production area in Hungary in 2022, which was 18 percent less than the amount of the previous year. According to experts, the watermelon production area was around 2,800 hectares this year, from which 125,000 tons of watermelons can be harvested.
Watermelon is one of the most important export vegetables in terms of volume, and its foreign trade balance has been positive for years. According to KSH data, Hungary’s watermelon imports increased by 12 percent to 4.54 thousand tons in the first five months of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year. The leading supplier of watermelons was Greece, from which 1.16 thousand tons of watermelons arrived by 19 percent. Among the suppliers, Spain took second place with 981.7 tons (January-May 2022: 1.11 thousand tons).
According to the data of AKI PÁIR, watermelons from Spain, Greece, Morocco and Italy were present in the offer of the Budapest Wholesale Market from the 19th week before the domestic season. This year, domestic watermelons entered the market in the 27th week, the long-striped ones were sold at HUF 440/kilogram. The price of watermelons increased by 2 percent to 263 forints/kilogram on the 27th-34th. per week compared to the average price of the same period of the previous year.
