NMHH: we use more and more mobile internet abroad
We use mobile internet much more boldly across national borders than a few years ago, while the volume of roaming voice calls did not increase – revealed the latest mobile market report of the National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH), summarizing the third and fourth quarters of 2023, which also pointed out that the use of mobile phones abroad by Hungarians is especially prominent in the summer season.
The NMHH informed MTI on Tuesday that the media authority publishes its mobile market report every six months, in which, in addition to the domestic use of mobile subscriptions, it examines their use abroad, i.e. the number and traffic of roaming mobile phones.
The report revealed that mobile phone usage by Hungarians abroad is highly seasonal: roaming traffic is exceptionally high in the third quarter, which is the holiday period, while it is low in the fourth and first quarters. They added that in the peak third quarter of 2023, 227 million minutes of voice calls and 15 million gigabytes of data were distributed abroad with Hungarian mobile subscriptions.
The traffic data in the current report reflect the normalization of international tourism after the coronavirus epidemic, as roaming mobile internet traffic has clearly increased in recent years. In the third quarter of 2023, domestic subscribers used more than three times as much data as in the same period of 2019, and the number of roaming subscriptions approached 2.5 million, thus exceeding the pre-pandemic level of 1.9 million, they wrote.
