NKFH: Counterfeit olive oils with the Vesuvio brand name were seized
Counterfeit olive oils with the Vesuvio brand name were seized by experts from the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) following an inspection at a retail and wholesale unit in the 19th district of the capital, the authority told MTI on Wednesday.
According to the announcement, the NKFH, based on a public interest report, conducted a full-scale inspection with the assistance of patrols from the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) at a retail and wholesale unit in the 19th district. During the inspection, the legality of the distribution of several “extra virgin olive oils” and similar products offered for sale was examined.
It was found that the data of the company responsible for the distribution of the products were not indicated on the inspected olive oils, and furthermore, the inspected food company was unable to prove the traceability of the products with an invoice, which is a fundamental food safety error, therefore the NKFH inspectors immediately seized the affected products on site.
After laboratory testing, it was found that these (their chemical parameters showed values typical of sunflower oil) did not meet the strict criteria for extra virgin olive oil and were considered counterfeit.
The authority blocked the olive oils named VESUVIO OIL EXTRA VIRGIN PRODUCT, VESUVIO OLIO DI OLIVA EXTRA VERGINE and VESUVIO EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL COLD EXTRACTION, with best-before dates of February 16, March 15 and 16, 2027.
