NKFH: air passengers received more than 15 million forints in compensation
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) and the government agencies under its professional management awarded more than 15 million forints in compensation to air passengers and imposed almost 100 million forints in consumer protection fines on offending airlines in the first eight months of the year, the authority announced in its statement on Tuesday.
The consumer protection authority ensures that passengers’ rights are enforced and not violated through continuous investigations, they added.
The NKFH and Government agencies take strict action against irregular practices of airlines, continuously investigating whether airlines ensure passenger rights and whether passengers receive the specified compensation and assistance, for example in the event of a flight cancellation or a long delay.
By the end of this summer alone, more than 330 consumer complaints had been received by the authority, mostly related to flight cancellations, significant delays and incomplete information. As a result of the procedures, passengers were awarded compensation of 38,750 euros, or approximately 15.5 million forints.
Under the professional guidance of the NKFH, government agencies also launched ex officio inspections, and investigations were launched not only based on consumer complaints received by the authority. Among other things, they conducted test purchases to screen out unfair commercial practices, investigated telephone customer services – due to premium calls – and checked the information on the airlines’ websites. During the test purchases, it was revealed that the companies did not provide the possibility of making a verbal complaint, or that the information on the fees was inadequate.
The authority highlighted that based on both consumer submissions and ex officio proceedings, the authority imposed a total of 91 million forints in consumer protection fines on the airlines.
Compared to last year, there were noticeably fewer flight cancellations and delays in the summer season, which was due, among other things, to the decisive action of the authorities. However, the NKFH and government agencies do not stop there, they continue to monitor airlines to ensure that every passenger receives the information, assistance and compensation they deserve – the NKFH wrote in a statement.
