NKFH: extensive cooperation with authorities for more effective consumer protection
Ministry and authorities playing a key role in the operation of the consumer protection institutional system have concluded a comprehensive cooperation agreement to further strengthen the protection of Hungarian people and promote fair businesses. The use of the common administrative interface established at the beginning of the year will enable even faster and more coordinated action to prevent unfair commercial practices against consumers, which will protect not only consumers but also law-abiding businesses, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) announced in its statement on Wednesday.
A total of eight national authorities, as well as 19 county and capital government offices, carry out everyday consumer protection tasks every day in order to protect the Hungarian people, the authority explained.
The cooperation agreement was signed by the Ministry of National Economy, which is responsible for consumer protection, and the government offices acting as consumer protection authorities. The Ministry of Public Administration and Regional Development, which is responsible for this, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority, which provides professional supervision over government agencies, as well as the competent Hungarian National Bank, the Economic Competition Authority and the National Food Chain Safety Authority, the announcement stated.
The aim of formalizing and making even closer the cooperation that already existed in everyday practice is to protect consumer rights more effectively and to provide businesses with an even more predictable legal environment. During the cooperation, the individual organizations pay special attention to the protection of children, the protection of consumers in the online space, as well as sustainability, environmental protection and environmental awareness.
As announced, in order to achieve common goals, from January 1, 2026, an internal administration interface will ensure even faster reactions by individual authorities and thus the possibility of coordinated immediate action in justified cases. The cooperation also extends to relations with international organizations, among others, and includes cooperation in the enforcement of public interest claims and joint communication, which supports the further strengthening of consumer awareness.
The parties involved in the cooperation will continue to act decisively within their own competence to protect Hungarian consumers, and their joint, coordinated opportunity to act guarantees the even more effective enforcement of consumer rights in Hungary – the NKFH wrote in its statement.
