NKFH: laboratory tests are used to verify the authenticity of textile product labeling
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) is checking the authenticity of the fiber composition of textile products through laboratory tests; the goal is to reveal whether products marked 100 percent cotton actually correspond to the material composition indicated on the label. If the tests reveal a discrepancy, official proceedings will be initiated for deception in order to protect Hungarian families – the NKFH told MTI on Wednesday.
They emphasized that the correct indication of the raw material of household textiles and clothing products is of paramount importance for consumers, as the fiber composition fundamentally influences their purchasing decisions. The use of false information is considered a misleading commercial practice that violates consumer rights.
In many cases, the actual composition of the product does not match the information on the label. In previous years, the authority examined children’s pajamas. Out of 40 products, instead of 100 percent cotton, the actual composition was 100 percent polyester in 4 cases and 40-60 percent polyester in 6 cases.
– the announcement said.
The examination is carried out by the NKFH’s accredited Food and Chemical Laboratory based on the provisions of the relevant EU legislation, as textile products can only be marketed if the labeling and marking meet the legal requirements. The authority pays special attention to ensuring that the “100% cotton” designation only appears on products that truly contain a single fiber – it was explained.
In the announcement, the authority drew attention to the fact that buyers should carefully investigate the composition of textile products and, if they experience any suspicious deviations, report them to the NKFH or the competent government agency.
