A joint official action was launched to eliminate the illegal fruit market that had developed in the parking lots of the surrounding stores near the Budapest Wholesale Market, in which auditors from the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) and the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) inspected the illegal fruit vendors several times a week for five weeks; The NKFH shut down 13 illegal vendors and imposed a fine of almost 1.5 million forints – the NKFH told MTI on Tuesday.

They added that the actions were carried out between XX-XXIII. The district police station patrols also helped.

According to the announcement the inspections revealed that mainly Romanian citizens were selling fruits from Romania and Poland – primarily blueberries, apricots and peaches – at much lower prices than the market price without any permits or markings.

The occasional vendors did not have a registered business, they purchased the fruits without invoices or with false receipts, and they were also unable to provide the inspectors with documents certifying the origin and safety of the products.

They emphasized that untraceable foods of unknown origin pose a serious food safety risk.

They also drew attention to the fact that illegal trade not only endangers the health and safety of customers, but also the operation of honest businesses.

The authorities will continue to monitor the Budapest Wholesale Market in the future. and, if necessary, further inspections will be carried out to ensure that legal, safe and transparent trade is maintained in the long term and that the interests of consumers are not harmed – the NKFH statement reads.
