NKFH: nautical-themed placemats recalled due to phthalate leaching
Navy-themed placemats recalled due to phthalate leaching; Phthalates, which are primarily used as plasticizers in industry, can damage the reproductive capacity and the hormonal system in the human body, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) told MTI on Wednesday.
Therefore, the authority requests that anyone who has purchased a nautical-themed placemat with the article number 38131030/02 not use it.
According to the announcement, based on a notification received through the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed Safety (RASFF), phthalate leaching from the placemats was detected during an official inspection. The product also reached Hungary through a German distributor.
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority contacted the company concerned, MMXH Lakberendezési Kft., without delay, which, in cooperation with the authority, immediately took the necessary measures within its own competence and recalled the affected items from consumers. The measures taken by the company and the further fate of the recalled products (destruction or disposal) are monitored by the NKFH.
Phthalates are compounds that are used by industry primarily as plasticizers, as they increase the flexibility and lifespan of plastics. Phthalates can be transferred to food primarily from materials, tools and packaging materials that come into contact with food, and can damage reproductive capacity and the hormonal system in the human body.
