Due to microbiological non-compliance, Nestlé Hungária Kft. recalled milk-based infant formula after a self-check revealed the presence of cereulide toxin from the bacterium Bacillus cereus – the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) told MTI on Tuesday.

Following the announcement, the company launched a comprehensive internal investigation, during which it was determined that the contamination came from raw materials used in production from a supplier – the authority informed.

During the internal investigation, it was determined that additional products may be affected by the contamination, so Nestlé Hungária Kft. decided to recall them and, in cooperation with the authority, immediately took the necessary measures, ensuring that any affected items were withdrawn from circulation and recalled from consumers.

The measures taken by the company and the further fate of the recalled products are being monitored by the NKFH – the announcement said.

According to Nestlé Hungária Kft., no illness has occurred as of Tuesday that is confirmed to be related to the consumption of the affected products – the authority indicated.

Bacillus cereus is a microorganism that occurs widely in nature, and It is often found in raw materials and sometimes in foods such as rice, milk and dairy products.

Some strains of the bacteria – such as cereulide – can cause food poisoning and are the most common pathogens in foodborne illnesses, along with Salmonella. Foods contaminated with cereulide can cause severe and persistent vomiting, diarrhea and unusual lethargy in infants within 30 minutes to 6 hours after consumption.
