No significant change in pear prices
According to preliminary data from the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA), 1.79 million tons of pears were produced in the European Union in 2024. This quantity is more (+5 percent) than in 2023, when the smallest quantity of the past decade was produced, but is below (–8 percent) the previous five-year average.
According to KSH data, 16.3 thousand tons of pears were harvested in Hungary in 2023, 18 percent more than a year earlier. WAPA data shows that the harvest may have decreased by 25 percent in 2024. In the first four weeks of this year, domestic pears were available at an average producer price of HUF 856/kilogram (+2 percent): Packham’s Triumph at HUF 809/kilogram (–4 percent), Alexander/Bosc Kobak at HUF 813/kilogram, and Vilmos at HUF 946/kilogram. The wholesale price of imported pears increased by 14 percent (to HUF 1,082/kilogram) during the same period. The wholesale price of the Alexander/Bosc Kobak variety from Italy changed to HUF 1,013/kilogram (+3 percent), and the price of the Santa Maria variety from Greece changed to HUF 1,079/kilogram (+17 percent). The price of the Italian Vilmos pear was HUF 1,154/kilogram at the same time.
