Netrisk: in January-February, more than 50 percent of travel insurance is already related to skiing
The proportion of ski insurance has jumped: after Christmas, 40 percent of travel insurance, and in January-February, more than 50 percent, is related to skiing; the average premium per person per day is around 900-1000 forints for premium category insurance – Netrisk.hu told MTI on Thursday.
The vast majority of skiers who take out travel insurance with Netrisk travel to nearby countries: Austria is the most popular destination, with 67 percent of bookings going there, followed by Slovakia, Italy, France and Poland.
The announcement quoted Márton Besnyő, the regional manager of the Netrisk Group responsible for Austria and Hungary, as saying that trips typically last 3-5 days, are made with 2-3 people and in more than 80 percent of cases by car.
This increases the risks not only on the ski slope, but also on the way there, which is why winter equipment, snow chains and vehicle assistance are at least as important as travel insurance itself.
The expert added that many people only think about accidents on the slope, even though winter travel is a serious challenge in itself, especially in mountainous environments.
In connection with skiing, attention was also drawn to the fact that the cost of a serious injury, mountain or helicopter rescue, or repatriation with a medical escort can be up to several million forints, which is typically not covered by basic insurance, an EU health insurance card or insurance related to a bank card. Therefore, it is important to take out travel insurance according to the purpose of your trip.
They emphasized that
For example, ski insurance should cover your own and rented ski equipment, possible mountain rescue, high-cost foreign medical care, reimbursement of ski passes in the event of an accident, and liability insurance if the skier causes damage to others.
They pointed out that Hungarian travelers are becoming increasingly aware: nine out of ten regularly take out travel insurance, and half of those who take out insurance already do so online, often directly on the day of departure. However, it is important to know that the insurance must be taken out within the country’s borders.
According to Netrisk data, the average ski insurance premium is stagnant, with the average cost for an entire trip typically being almost 11,000 forints, which is an expense of 900-1,000 forints per person per day for premium insurance. This pales in comparison to the costs of a multi-million-hund rescue or medical care abroad – Netrisk.hu explained in its statement.
