The ‘countrified‘ hotel is popular
But customers at a real-life west country B&B can’t get enough of being insulted, appalled and maltreated by the owners.
Instead, they are queuing up to watch incompetent staff search for an escaped pet rat, mess up their food orders, do Hitler impressions and remove a ‘corpse’ as part of Fawlty Towers theme weekends.
It’s proved a financial lifeline for manager Lorraine Godwin, who took inspiration from the 1970s TV show in a bid to beat the recession at the Richmoor Hotel in Weymouth, Dorset.
In the ‘interactive comedy experience’, she plays the role of Sybil while her son, Tom, is hapless Spanish waiter Manuel.
Her 52-year-old boyfriend, Andy Hillier, takes the star role of sarcastic manager Basil.
Mrs Godwin, 51, said: ‘Andy is so good at playing Basil I think if a producer comes here and sees him in action he could end up in the West End. Basil will often pick on people but they love it.’
The events are now so popular the 27-room hotel is organising more to keep up with demand.
‘When Manuel’s rat turns up in the cheese and biscuits we have had women screaming,’ she said. ‘Luckily, it’s not a real rat, though.’ – British Metro writes. (MTI)
