The Hungarian startup that reduces carbon footprint and joins the STRT portfolio, headed by Petya Balogh, this year, is entering the international stage
Petya Balogh and his STRT Holding Plc., as well as two other investors, saw a dream in Carbon.Crane, which specializes in reducing the carbon footprint of digital marketing activities, such as websites and email campaigns. The 350 billion emails sent worldwide every day and the 200 million actively operating websites – due to the server parks working in the background – constitute an increasingly large and growing share of global carbon emissions, and the 100% Hungarian-owned and domestically founded startup has developed unique solutions for this. The profession also values unique and innovative services internationally, which was most recently recognized with the MediaSpace Global Changemakers’ Awards 2024.
Although we tend to view digitalization, such as our computers and smartphones as part of it, as green due to the elimination of paper use, these devices are also taking an increasingly large share of global carbon emissions due to the huge server parks working in the background due to their networked use. While internet use was responsible for around 4 percent of the Earth’s total carbon emissions in 2020, it is expected to double by 2025 and reach 14 percent by 2040. As a point of perception: even 4 percent corresponds to the emissions of aviation.
Moreover, few people deal with this area worldwide, which is why the service developed by the Hungarian experts at Carbon.Crane is unique. The company can assess the carbon footprint of a complete website – even containing hundreds of thousands of subpages – including the emissions of individual web pages, as well as which elements of the page and which files cause high carbon emissions. Based on this, they can also make suggestions for optimizing the page and verify the results of the carbon-conscious efforts of the given website. If there is a need, they will continue to monitor the page and intervene immediately in the event of anomalies. By optimizing the elements on the pages – images, videos, texts, program code – in the case of a site with higher traffic, this can mean significant energy savings and emission reductions measured in tons per year, as well as cost savings of up to millions. Companies and institutions such as E.ON, MBH Bank, Spar or the Budapest Festival Orchestra have already used Carbon.Crane’s service, while Mastercard has already applied solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the US market as well as in the Hungarian market.
