International survey: travel appetite in Europe at record high despite global tensions
Despite climate change, global uncertainties and geopolitical turmoil, travel is booming in Europe, according to an international survey by Europ Assistance. According to the 24th edition of the Holiday Barometer, nearly eight out of ten Europeans plan to travel this summer, with interest in foreign destinations also high. Travel planning is becoming more conscious: safety has become a primary consideration, while fear of natural disasters has also increased noticeably. In addition, purchasing power determines holiday plans: almost 60 percent of Europeans who are not planning to travel cite financial constraints as the main obstacle.
Despite geopolitical tensions around the world, the desire to travel is unprecedented, and travelers are willing to discover new cultures and destinations, according to a survey examining holiday trends in 23 countries. Eight out of ten Europeans (79%) and seven out of ten Americans (71%) plan to travel between June and September, the highest level ever recorded since the barometer was launched.
Interest in international travel is also growing in countries that typically prefer domestic holidays, with 36% of Italians and 35% of French people also opting for international travel this year.
Two major holiday trends are common across all continents
63% of European travellers plan to travel to the beach, while 28% prefer city breaks. The top three destinations for Europeans remain Spain, Italy and France, with Asia and Africa also becoming increasingly popular.
According to respondents, the ideal holiday is one where they can relax and escape from their daily routine, discover new places and make memories. Two major holiday trends are emerging across all continents: travellers are looking for holidays that allow them to gather with family and friends and explore nature.
The main obstacle to travel is financial constraints
Spending power is a key factor in holiday plans. Among Europeans who are not planning to travel between June and September, 58% cite financial constraints as the main obstacle. However, 47% of Europeans who are planning to travel say they are spending more money on their holiday than last year.
