Pessimistic consumer sentiment eased somewhat in the euro area in September
The eurozone’s pessimistic consumer sentiment eased somewhat in September, according to a preliminary report published on Monday by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN).
The eurozone consumer sentiment index rose to minus 14.9 points in September, from minus 15.5 points in August. Analysts had expected minus 15 points.
The stronger reading reflects lower borrowing costs and a slowdown in inflation in recent months. However, uncertainty over European fiscal policies and the potential impact of trade tariffs cloud the outlook.
The index hit a historic low of minus 28.6 points in September 2022.
Also provisional data show that the EU consumer sentiment index rose to minus 14.3 points in September, from minus 14.8 points in August.
Final figures will be published on 29 September.
