Producer prices in Germany fell in August
Producer prices in Germany fell more than analysts had expected in August and more than in the previous month, according to a report by the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, on Friday. The decline in producer prices was primarily caused by a decline in energy prices, especially the price of natural gas.
Producer prices for industrial products in Germany were 2.2 percent lower in August than a year earlier, in August 2024.
A month earlier, in July, producer prices fell by 1.5 percent on an annual basis.
Analysts had expected a smaller annual price decline of 1.7 percent for August.
In the eighth month of the year, an annual decline was recorded for the sixth consecutive month, the steepest decline since May 2024, in 15 months.
The decline was still mainly due to lower energy prices, while the prices of intermediate goods were also lower than a year earlier. In contrast, capital goods, non-durables and durables rose in price.
Energy prices fell by 8.5 percent year-on-year, after a 6.8 percent decline in July. Energy prices fell by 1.0 percent month-on-month in August.
According to the Destatis statement, the decline in the price of natural gas had the greatest impact on the annual development of energy prices. In August, the price of natural gas fell by 11.0 percent year-on-year, while electricity cost 10.8 percent less than a year earlier.
Producer prices excluding energy rose by 0.8 percent year-on-year in August, while a 0.2 percent decrease was recorded on a monthly basis.
