No shortage of eggs is expected at Easter
High-quality Hungarian eggs are also available to customers during the Easter period – the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy draws attention. The average annual egg consumption is 236 eggs per person, traditionally much more eggs are consumed at Easter and Christmas.
Egg consumption in Hungary is approximately 2.3 billion eggs per year, an average of 236 eggs/person/year. Domestic egg producers can meet the usual demand during the year, but during the two peak periods typical of the egg market – Christmas and Easter – imports are also needed every year.
The European Union has been self-sufficient in eggs for a long time, and our country is 80-85% self-sufficient. Edible eggs can be produced most efficiently and at the lowest cost in cage farming, in deep litter farming the costs are 15-20% higher, in free-range farming 40-50% higher, and in organic farming it is about twice as much as in cage farming.
