Proportion of people following a healthy diet stable
According to the latest survey conducted by GfK Hungária about eating habits, practically all foods are consumed less frequently. Traditional dishes and flavours continue to remain dominant. The proportion of people who follow a healthy diet shows stagnation. According to Ákos Kozák, managing director of GfK Hungária, the percentage of household income spent on food has again exceeded 25 percent, which represents a reversal of the trend seen in recent years. As Ottilia Dörnyei has told us, recession has had less effect on food than on other sectors so far. However, people eat at home more often in order to save money. The proportion of people for whom dinner is the main meal of the day has continued to grow. 85 percent of women like to cook and the same is true for 35 percent of men. 50 percent of the people interviewed eat three times a day, but the number of people who eat only twice a day has increased in the past two years. Classic Hungarian dishes including soup, potato, poultry and vegetables continue to enjoy 90+ percent popularity. Poultry is consumed in 94 percent households, while pork is consumed by 84 percent and fish by 70 percent. Another sign of recession has been a drop in the frequency of consumption for all foods, with the exception of flavoured yoghurt. The popularity of white bread remains unbroken, while that of brown bread has been decreasing for years. The percentage of people who regard themselves as following a “normal” diet has not changed (55%), similarly to that of people following a “healthy” diet.
