The rate of submitted reports has not improved for antibiotic-containing preparations used in farm animals
In 2024, roughly half of the quantities marketed were reported as antimicrobial preparations used in the main food-producing animals, similar to previous years. The pig and rabbit sectors performed best: antibiotic use reports were received from about 80% of the farms last year. In the poultry sector, the rate is only around 50%, while in the case of cattle and small ruminants, the willingness to report is even lower. Nébih asks those concerned to provide data regularly, as it is in Hungary’s interest to provide complete and reliable data to the EMA.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently lenient with those member states that submit their annual reports below 90% data coverage, however, the grace period is limited and may cause problems in the future if the trend does not improve. Accordingly, the annual ESUAvet (European Sales and Use of Antimicrobials for veterinary medicine) report published by the EMA does not yet present in detail the data of those countries, including Hungary, that provide incomplete data sets (below 90% coverage). In our country, based on the reports submitted, in 2024, most antibiotics were used in the pig sector (64.6%), followed by poultry (20.2%), rabbits (11.3%), and the cattle sector (3.7%).
7% of the total amount of active substances used belonged to the AMEG B category
Its use is limited, and its application must be supported by the results of resistance tests. These active substances were most often used in poultry. AMEG category C preparations (which may only be used if there is no lower-ranking, available, effective active ingredient-containing preparation) accounted for 26% of total use, while AMEG category D preparations (first-choice preparations, which may also only be used responsibly) accounted for 67%.
In terms of pharmaceutical form, various forms mixed with drinking water and medicinal premixes were also consumed in the largest quantities in 2024
These two forms accounted for more than 92% of total consumption. It is a positive change that the use of medicinal premixes is slowly decreasing, while the predominance of preparations mixed with drinking water is still the result of group treatments.
