Hungarians don’t eat what they like, but what they can afford
Many people in Hungarian society don’t buy the food they want, but what they can afford – it was said at the Erste Bank analysts’ background discussion. As a result, Hungarian consumers lost several years in quality food consumption. InfoRádió asked Zoltán Fórián, the leading agricultural expert of Erste Agrár Kompetencia Központ, about the topic.
According to Zoltán Fórián, high prices result in a decrease in demand, which is also felt in the Hungarian food market. At one time, it seemed that food demand had taken a favorable turn, but now consumers prefer cheaper products. The demand for discounts has increased strongly, and we can witness the real fashion of food market promotions.
According to the expert, awareness, which previously favored quality over price, has now faded into the background, and the hunt for cheaper products has once again become the “national sport” of people. However, the return to higher quality, premium products is a long-term process that can take years.
