Several mugs recalled due to heavy metal leaching
Due to the leaching of heavy metals, various mugs, including enamel mugs with the inscriptions MTV, SpongeBob, South Park and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, have been recalled – the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) announced.
It was emphasized that some heavy metals can accumulate in the body and damage the nervous system, kidneys and other organs in the long term, and can increase the risk of cancer.
Therefore, the authority asks that if anyone has purchased an enamel mug and key chain with the inscriptions MTV, SpongeBob, South Park or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they should not use it.
According to the announcement, based on a notification received through the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed Safety (RASFF), heavy metals were detected during official inspections from various mugs. The product also arrived in Hungary through an English distributor.
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority immediately contacted the company concerned, BTDM Kft., which, in cooperation with the authority, immediately took the necessary measures within its own competence and recalled the affected items from consumers.
The authority is monitoring the measures taken by the company and the further fate of the collected mugs (destruction or removal) – the NKFH stated in its statement.
