On Thursday evening, the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party held a round table discussion under the title “The Hunger Games – the situation of food couriers with an immigrant background”, which focused on the working conditions of guest workers in Hungary, especially food couriers, and the protection of their rights. It is not only the guest workers who are in a difficult situation, but it is also more difficult for the Hungarian workers.

During the conversation, it was said that the number of foreign workers in Hungary has increased significantly in recent years, especially guest workers from the Far East, such as workers from Vietnam and the Philippines. The couriers employed by the platforms are often faced with short-term, profit-oriented work contracts, where working hours and routes are strictly regulated, and it is difficult to assert their interests, reports Telex.

Gergő Tóth, the party’s representative candidate and a courier himself, emphasized the importance of protecting interests and the potential benefits of collective agreements. In addition, it highlighted the complexity of the workers’ situation, especially the shortcomings of interest protection organizations and state regulations. During the conversation, he emphasized that the EU regulation due in the future, which would regulate platform-based work, could represent a significant step forward in the situation of couriers, but it is doubtful when and in what form this will be implemented in Hungary.

During the event, the issue of further training and integration of foreign couriers was also discussed, to which the Dog Party would respond by organizing training opportunities, such as KRESZ education or Hungarian language teaching. Based on the discussion, it became clear that in the current labor market conditions there is a need for better support for guest workers and a more transparent and fairer regulation of their labor law situation.
