October 23, the anniversary of the 1956 revolution, falls on a Thursday this year, so Hungarian shoppers can enjoy a four-day long weekend. Most large department stores will be closed on this day, so it is worth planning your shopping in advance.

Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Auchan, Penny, Spar, CBA/Príma, Reál and Coop will not open on October 23, but stores operating at gas stations – such as some Tesco Express or Spar – will be available with limited opening hours. All stores will operate as usual between October 24 and 26.

The next store closure is expected on November 1, All Saints’ Day, which will also be a public holiday. And during the Christmas period, we can prepare for a five-day long weekend: on December 24, stores are expected to be open only until noon, and on December 25-26, they will be closed.

In 2026, there will be a total of four four-day and three three-day long weekends, all of which are related to red-letter holidays, thus representing predictable closure periods for the retail sector.
