Nébih: labeling and food quality errors were found during the inspection of rums
The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) tested rums, a labeling error was found in one product, and the experts took action in one due to a food quality problem; the office initiated proceedings against both distributors and imposed a fine of almost 700 thousand forints – Nébih announced on its website on Monday.
In the Supermint program test, Nébih tested 20 rums from the selection of larger retail chains: 11 gold and 9 dark rums, of which 18 were foreign and 2 were Hungarian-made.
The products were checked for, among other things, the alcohol, methanol and sugar content. The alcohol content of the tested rums – according to their labels – was between 37.5 and 43 percent by volume. Based on the measurement results, the experts found all gold and dark rums to be in order.
They examined whether the mandatory elements were correctly included on the labels of the rums: the name, the net quantity, the actual alcohol content or the batch identifier, and whether the other labeling elements met the relevant criteria. From a labeling perspective, the inspectors objected to one rum because the alcohol content indicated on the label differed by almost 3 percent from the value measured in the laboratory. Official proceedings were initiated against the distributor of the rum concerned and they were asked to correct the error.
Two products were found in the Nébih laboratory to be white rum. They were therefore not allowed to participate in the gold and dark rum competition, but the full official inspection was carried out on these as well. According to the measurement results, the alcohol content of one of the white rums did not reach the minimum 37.5% by volume required for the product category. Due to the quality error, official proceedings were initiated against the distributor of this product and the distribution of the affected rum was prohibited.
It was highlighted that the combined value of the fines imposed on the affected distributors in the two proceedings was 685 thousand forints.
Based on the evaluation of experts and laypeople, Plantation Barbados came first among gold rums, while Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva rum came first in the dark rum competition, the office announced.
