Nébih: cat litters are safe
Cat litter was examined by the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), the tested products were safe, there were no problems with the presence of mold and microorganisms, but a small amount of foreign material was found in seven litters, the office told MTI on Tuesday.
In the latest test of the Süpermenta program, Nébih checked 26 cat litters, which included twenty clumping and six non-clumping type litters.
Microbiological tests were carried out in Nébih’s laboratories: the number of salmonella, enterobacteria, molds and microorganisms in cat litter was checked; the values obtained were found to be adequate. The specialists also investigated how the number of enterobacteria in cat litter changes after use. Based on the results, it was highlighted that farmers should pay attention to the regular cleaning of litter.
The specialists measured the dust content of the products and found that – compared to the other litter – a lumpy cat litter contained a significant amount of dust. They also checked the cat litter for foreign matter. A small amount of contamination – about 7 grams in total – was found in seven products: pearls, pieces of wood and plaster, and gravel.
The cat litter was rated by experts and laymen in the popularity test. They took into account, for example, the packaging, the smell of the product, its stock, its ability to hold water, its contamination and the quality of dusting. In the clumping cat litter competition, Pet Bistro Ultra-Klumpstreu took the top spot, Premiere Excellent Pure came in second, and Tesco Pet Specialist Natural Aroma cat litter took third place. Among the non-clumping products, Repeta won first place, Pepco for pets came second, and Powercat cat litter took third place – read Nébih’s announcement.
