Nébih: 3 out of 27 gins did not meet the requirements
In the comparative examination of the product test of the Süpermenta program, 27 gins were analyzed, of which 3 did not meet the legal requirements based on the food quality characteristics or the markings on the labels, therefore an official procedure was initiated against the manufacturers concerned, and the imposition of fines is in progress, the total value of which is approximately 5 million HUF – the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) told MTI on Tuesday.
Nébih specialists compared a total of 27 products, 18 gins and 9 London gins, of which 20 were foreign and 7 were Hungarian, based on the selection of larger commercial chains.
The laboratory experts checked the alcohol, methanol and sugar content of the products. According to their labels, the alcohol content of the gins included in the test was between 37.5 and 46 percent by volume. Based on laboratory tests, the alcohol content of a product did not reach the minimum 37.5 percent by volume required for the product category.
In the case of gins, it is also important to check the methanol content (methyl alcohol, wood alcohol), because its amount indicates the delicacy of the agricultural ethyl alcohol used to produce the gin. According to laboratory measurements, the methanol content of a gin exceeded the limit value specified in the decree. The product contained wine spirit according to the package and the product sheet, however, this ingredient is not permitted in the case of gins. The inspectors initiated official proceedings against the manufacturer of the affected products and banned the distribution of the problematic gins.
